Baltimore- A power outage on the UMBC campus forced the stoppage
of play in the 72ndminute between the host Retrievers
and St. Francis (N.Y.) at Retriever Soccer Park. Neither team
scored during the action and the contest reached the legal
70-minute mark so it was officially declared a 0-0 draw.
UMBC is now 1-0-1 on the season, while St. Francis (N.Y.) is
0-1-0. The game is part of the weekend's Holiday Inn Express BWI
Classic. Fairleigh Dickinson defeated host Navy, 1-0, in Annapolis
this evening and on Saturday the Knights will visit UMBC (7:00
p.m.), while the Terriers play at Navy.
The Retrievers extended their unbeaten streak to 10 in a row
(7-0-3) dating back to Oct. 15 of the 2010 campaign.
UMBC outshot the visitors, 12-10, and rang the iron twice. In
the 18th minute, sophomore forward Pete Caringi
III (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall) nearly converted
senior Andrew Bulls'
(Millersville, Md./McDonogh) corner kick, but his header from close
range struck the near right post.
In the 64th minute, Bulls had a free kick from
24 yards away and his shot solidly rang off the crossbar, above
Terrier netminder Tyler Clarhaut's outstretched arm.
Minutes later, the lights shut down and all power was lost to
Retriever Soccer Park. The campus is expected to regain power in
the overnight hours.
UMBC had eight corner kicks to a pair for the Terriers.
Clarhaut made one save for the visitors, while UMBC senior
netminder Dan
Louisignau(Wilmington, Del.) made three for the hosts.
Louisignau earned his seventh shutout in a UMBC uniform in 17
appearances.
