Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Hartford Friday

BALTIMORE—The UMBC baseball team split a pair of America East games with Hartford Friday afternoon, winning, 5-1, before falling, 16-3. With the split, the Retrievers are now 9-36 (1-19 America East), while the Hawks are 5-42-1 (2-19 AE).

In the first game, sophomore starter Mike Mitchell (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic/Frederick CC) (2-10) pitched the complete game for the win, allowing just one run on four hits with three strikeouts.

Redshirt freshman D.J. Ream (Columbia, Pa./Hempfield) led off the bottom of the fourth with a double to left. After two quick groundouts, junior Brian Klukowicz (Clifton, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) hit an opposite field home run, his first of the season, to give the Retrievers a 2-1 lead.

UMBC added insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, when senior Rich Conlon (Vienna, Va./James Madison) led off with a walk and scored on a Ream double to right-center field. Ream then came around to score when junior Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) singled to left. After a sacrifice bunt, senior Casey Medairy (Elkridge, Md./Howard) doubled down the left field line to score Himmelstein.

Hartford starter Hunter Englehart (0-7) allowed five runs in five innings of work with four strikeouts.

In the second game, freshman Rob McCabe (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's) doubled to lead off the first and scored on another double from Ream.

Mike Aldrich had three hits and four RBI, while Matt Walker hit a three-run home run in the fifth to lead the Hawks.

Freshman starter Jon Cohn (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep) (0-5) allowed three runs in three innings of work to take the loss.

Hartford starter Tyler Corsi (1-5) earned the win, going seven innings with six strikeouts, allowing just one run.

The two teams conclude their 2011 seasons Sunday with a doubleheader at noon. There will be a special senior ceremony in between the two games to honor UMBC's eight seniors.
