BALTIMORE—The UMBC baseball team won for the second consecutive time under the lights at Baseball Factory Field, defeating Mount St. Mary's 7-2. With the win, the Retrievers improved to 6-26, while the Mount fell to 12-26.
The game was delayed 78 minutes in the top of the fourth due to lightning in the Baltimore area.
Junior Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) drove in three runs, including a two-run single in the bottom of the second to break a 1-1 tie that scored freshmen Rob McCabe (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's) and D.J. Ream(Columbia, Pa./Hempfield).
In the bottom of the fourth, senior Rick Phillips (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) hit a two-out, two-run single up the middle to give the Retrievers a 6-1 lead. Phillips drove in fellow senior Rich Conlon (Vienna, Va./James Madison) his next time up in the sixth, extending UMBC's lead to six.
Sophomore Mike Mitchell (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic/Frederick CC) came on in relief in the second and earned the win to move to 1-7 on the season. Junior Luke DiBlasi (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) pitched three scoreless innings of relief, striking out three.
Mount St. Mary's starter Michael Locondro (3-4) took the loss after pitching three innings, allowing four runs (one earned).
The Retrievers return to action this weekend when they travel to Maine for a four-game America East series.
