Baseball Drops Doubleheader to America East Rival Stony Brook Friday

BALTIMORE—The UMBC baseball team battled through the rain Friday, but dropped a pair of games to America East rival Stony Brook, 6-3 and 11-0, at Baseball Factory Field.

 

With the losses, the Retrievers fell to 5-25 (0-8 America East), while the Seawolves improved to 25-9 (8-1 AE).

 

In the bottom of the third of the first game, freshman Rob McCabe (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Joseph's) induced a one-out walk before stealing second. He moved to third when redshirt freshman D.J. Ream (Columbia, Pa./Hempfield) reached on an error. McCabe came on to score on a RBI grounder by senior Rich Conlon (Vienna, Va./James Madison).

 

In the bottom of the fifth, Ream, Conlon and junior Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) singled with one out to load the bases. Ream came home to score on a throwing error by Stony Brook starter Nick Tropeano and Conlon scored on a single by seniorRick Phillips (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg).

 

Sophomore starter Mike Mitchell (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic/Frederick CC) pitched four innings, allowing no earned runs (six unearned), but took the loss to fall to 0-7. Junior Josh Dick (Winchester, Va./James Wood) pitched a perfect two innings in relief.

 

Tropeano (8-1) struck out 10 in six innings of work to earn the win. James Campbell pitched the seventh for his second save.

 

In the second game, Stony Brook's Tyler Johnson (6-2), Josh Barry and Anthony Luciano combined for a five-hit shutout after the Seawolves struck for nine runs in the sixth inning.

 

Junior starter Sean Swetnam (Greenbelt, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt/George Mason) pitched five innings, allowing four earned runs. Junior Steve Miller (Newark, Del./Dickinson) pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth.

 

William Carmona led the Seawolves, leading off the sixth inning with a long home run to right center.

 

The two teams conclude their three-game series at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
