Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Longwood Saturday Afternoon



BALTIMORE—The UMBC baseball team dropped a pair of games to Longwood Saturday afternoon, falling 11-0 and 8-4 at Baseball Factory Field at UMBC. The Retrievers fall to 3-16 on the year, while the Lancers improve to 21-10.

 

Down 5-0 in fourth of the second game, junior Curtis Schickner (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) doubled and moved to third on a single by senior Rich Conlon (Vienna, N.J./James Madison). Junior Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) reached on a fielder's choice that scored Schickner and came around to score later in the inning on a RBI groundout by junior Brian Klukowicz (Clifton, N.J./St. Peter's Prep). Junior Michael Pesci (Parsippany, N.J./DePaul Catholic) scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to two.

 

In the fifth inning, the Retrievers cut the lead to 5-4 on a two-out rally with freshman Kevin Kean (Millersville, Md./Old River) doubling before scoring on a single by Schickner.

 

Longwood starter Cory Ramsey (4-2) pitched six innings, allowing four runs with four strikeouts. Freshman starter Jon Cohn (Scottsdale, Ariz./Notre Dame Prep) allowed three earned runs in 3.1 innings of work.

 

In the first game, the Lancers used three big innings on their way to an 11-0 win.

 

UMBC starter Mike Mitchell (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic Frederick CC) took the loss to fall to 0-4. Long wood starter Chris Briere improved to 5-2 after pitching five innings.

 

Schickner had five hits on the day, including three-for-three in the first game.

 

The two teams conclude their three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
