Towson,Md. – The UMBC women's tennis team captured two of
three doubles matches and five of six singles contests and defeated
cross-town rival Towson by a 6-1 count.
The Retrievers improved to 9-8 on the season, while Towson fell
to14-7.
UMBC jumped out to a good start as the newly-formed No. 2
doubles squad of freshman Kim Berghaus
(Offenbach, Germany) and senior Emily Mannix
(Hillsborough, N;J.) blanked Ioana Aprodu/Ariel Burke, 8-0. The
Retrievers won the doubles point as the No. 3 Swedish duo of
sophomore Heidi
Danielsson (Jonkoping, Sweden) and freshman Josefin
Stange-Jonsson (Vasteras, Sweden) won in a tiebreaker, 9-8
(8-6), over Towson's Beth Daub/Nisha Shah.
The Retrievers increased the lead to 3-0 as Berghaus and
sophomore Julia Gregara-Cano (Badajoz, Spain) posted efficient
singles victories. Berghaus, at the No. 1 slot, dispatched of
Aandria Carr, 6-0, 6-1, while Gregara-Cano ousted Caitlin White,
6-1, 6-1.
Towson picked up a point at No. 5 singles, but Mannix clinched
the match for the visitors with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Andrea
Samlin at the No. 4 position.
No. 2 junior Carmen Jackman
(Silver Spring, Md./Blake) and No. 6 Stange-Jonsson also posted
singles victories for UMBC.
The Retrievers complete the regular season at America East rival
Stony Brook on April 23.
