Box Score Washington, D.C.- Sophomore forward Chase Plummer
(Elizabeth, N.J.) scored 18 points to lead a game UMBC effort, but
the Retrievers fell, 69-58, to American University at Bender
Arena.
The Retrievers committed a season-low 10 turnovers and
outrebounded American, 41-36, but hit only 7 of 27 shots from the
floor in the second half.
Plummer nearly pulled off a double-double with a team-high nine
rebounds. Junior Ryan Cook (Laurel,
Md./Pallotti) added 13 points and seven caroms. Senior post Jake Wasco
(Philadelphia, Pa.) scored a season-high 10 points.
American's Charles Hinkle, who entered the game averaging 23.0
points per game, led the Eagles with 18 points.
Cook and Wasco came off the bench to spark a 17-6 UMBC surge,
which turned a 16-11 deficit into a 28-22 lead with 4:04 remaining
in the half. But the Eagles closed the stanza with back-to-back
treys in the final 39 seconds to grab a 37-32 advantage at the
break.
UMBC could not find the range in the second half, recording just
two field goals in the first 14 minutes of the stanza. American
extended the lead to 11 points at 58-47 with 4:30 to play, but
Plummer scored five consecutive points to cut the deficit to 58-52
with 2:45 remaining. The teams exchanged field goals, but the
Eagles hit five-of-six free throws, while UMBC came up empty
offensively.
American won for the sixth straight time and improved to 6-2 on
the season, while UMBC fell to 0-7.
UMBC shot just 36.7 percent (22 of 60) for the game and misfired
on 14 of 16 attempts from behind the arc. American hit 42.9
percent, but converted five more treys and eight more free throws
than their guests.
UMBC is off until Dec. 10 when they complete this five-game road
swing at Towson.
