BALTIMORE—On a day when the UMBC women's soccer team (0-13-3, 0-5-2 AE) honored its seniors, it was the Retriever underclassmen who stole the show in a 1-1 double-overtime draw with America East rival New Hampshire (4-11-2, 2-4-1 AE) Thursday afternoon at UMBC Stadium.

Before the game, the Retrievers honored seniors LeAnne Edgar (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon), Megan McDonald(Wyoming, Pa./Dallas), Kelsi Morris (Bowie, Md./Bowie/Pittsburgh), Brooke Piper (London, Ontario/A.B. Lucas) and Mo Van Vlerah (Germantown, Md./Northwest) in a Senior Day ceremony.

But in the 23rd minute, junior back Sarah Purdum (West Fenwick Island, Del./Indian River) pushed a pass ahead to junior forward Rachel McKee (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron). McKee, who was named UMBC's America East Player of the Game, beat her defender and blasted her shot inside the right post from eight yards out to give UMBC a 1-0 lead. The goal was McKee's team-best seventh of the season.

The Retrievers maintained their 1-0 advantage until the 62nd minute, when the Wildcats found the equalizer. After a free kick, defender Kelly Spencer played the ball back to midfielder Stephanie Gilkenson, who controlled it in the middle and rocketed her shot over leaping UMBC sophomore goalie Lauren Kadet's (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) head. Gilkenson earned her team's Player of the Game honors.

UMBC had a good opportunity to win with 18:23 remaining, as sophomore forward Amy Savage (Ottawa, Ontario/Sir Wilfrid Laurier) had a breakaway on a counter-attack and sent a pass to a wide-open McKee, but her shot went just wide.

The game went to overtime, and the Wildcats managed seven shots in the extra 20 minutes, including five in the second session, but none found the back of the net. The Retrievers had another good chance less than two minutes into the first extra period, as sophomore midfielder Stephanie Smith (Severna Park, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had a long run up the right side, but UNH goalie Erica Correa made a diving stop on the shot to the near post.

Kadet recorded nine saves in the game, while Correa stopped six shots for the Wildcats.

New Hampshire outshot UMBC, 19-15, and held a 4-2 advantage on corner kicks.

The Retrievers conclude the season on Sunday, when they visit America East rival Binghamton at 1 p.m.
