Box Score Emmitsburg, Md.—The UMBC men's soccer team rallied from a
2-0 halftime deficit and came away with a 3-2 victory over the
Mountaineers at Waldron Family Stadium.
Senior forward Levi
Houapeu (Germantown, Md./Watkins Mill) and freshman
reserve forward Pete Caringi
III (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) were the
offensive heroes for UMBC for the second time in four days. Houapeu
scored the game-tying goal and Caringi added the game-winner in
today's contest, after Caringi had the game-tying tally and Houapeu
the winner in the 2-1 overtime victory over La Salle on
Wednesday.
The Retrievers (4-2-0) earned their first road victory of the
season and halted the Mount's (3-3-0) three-game winning
streak.
The Mount took a 2-0 lead into intermission, scoring in the
34thminute and then getting the benefit of an own goal
in the 40thminute.
But UMBC responded early in the second half, cutting the lead in
half just 7:14 into the stanza. Senior Dustin
Dzwonkowski (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) knocked
sophomore Andrew Bulls'
(Millersville, Md./McDonogh) free kick to the far post, where
senior fullback Chris
Williams (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) headed it home for
his first goal of the season.
The Retrievers tied the score in the
63rd minute, as Houapeu converted another Bulls'
free kick into the lower left side of the cage. Houapeu
now has six goals in six games this season and became the
11th player in school history to amass 25 career
goals.
Bulls also initiated the game-winning goal by Caringi with 12:39
left on the clock. He got the ball to sophomore Milo
Kapor (Woodbridge, Ont./Emily Carr), who served it and
Caringi was able to convert for his fourth score of the
campaign.
Junior netminder Dan
Louisignau (Wilmington, Del/Concord/U. Virginia) got
credit for his first UMBC victory, making one save in the final 45
minutes of action.
UMBC, which was missing the services of injured starters Nirav
Kadam and Liam Paddock,
used 19 players in the game.
The Retrievers extended their winning streak to seven and
unbeaten streak to 12 vs. the Mount. They lead the all-time series,
21-11-2.
UMBC returns to action on Wednesday when they face another local
rival on the road, taking on the Loyola Greyhounds at 7:00 p.m.
