BALTIMORE - The UMBC baseball dropped both games of a doubleheader to Maine, 13-2 and 7-3, Saturday afternoon at the Baseball Factory Field. With the losses, UMBC drops to 9-37 (4-18 America East), while Maine improves to 32-20 (15-7 AEC).
In the first game, the Black Bears used four home runs and a six-run sixth inning to propel them to a 13-2 win.
UMBC used seven pitchers who threw an inning each, with freshman Samuel Bashioum (Fayette City, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) (0-1) taking the loss. Maine's A.J. Bazdanes (7-4) pitched three innings, striking out four, to take the win.
In the second game, the Black Bears scored at least a run in each of the first four innings on their way to winning 7-3.
In the seventh inning, junior Casey Medairy (Elkridge, Md./Howard) left off with a single before scoring on a fellow junior Rich Conlon (Vienna, Va./James Madison) triple down the right-field line. Junior Austin Drewyer (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) followed with a RBI single to center.
Medairy and Conlon each had three hits in the second game.
Maine's Matt Jebb (3-3) struck out four in five innings of work to earn the win. Sophomore Sean Swetnam (Greenbelt, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt/George Mason) (3-4) took the loss.
The Retrievers conclude their 2010 season Saturday, when they finish their four-game series with Maine with a doubleheader at 11 a.m.
