Retrivers Drop Opener at Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. - UMBC baseball opened up its 2026 season on Friday afternoon at Longwood, falling 6-4. The Retrievers move to 0-1 on the season, while Longwood improves to 4-1.

Ehi Okojie went 2-4 at the plate with a double and an RBI single to lead the Retrievers at the plate. Danny Orr added an RBI double, and Danny Wyatt and Jesiah Carpenter each drove in a run for UMBC.

Eddie Sargent started on the bump for UMBC, tossing 5.0 innings, striking out three. Sergio Droz pitched the final 3.0 innings, allowing just one run and whiffing a pair.

Jon Howard and JT Brown homered for Longwood, while Tre Keels drove in a pair of runs for the Lancers. Jaxon Lloyd started for Longwood, tossing 6.0 three-run innings. Jackson Nash picked up the save, closing out the contest with 3.0 scoreless innings.

UMBC struck immediately, as Anthony Mascuilli and Dylan Melton drew walks to lead off the game. After retiring Orr, Howard allowed a single through the left side off the bat of Okojie to put the Retrievers ahead 1-0.

The Lancers followed suit with two runs in the bottom of the first, getting a two-run double from Keels after singles off the bats of Lucas Johnson and Brogan Jones.

Trailing 3-1 after two, Orr doubled with one out in the top of the third to drive in Melton who was hit by a 1-1 pitch.

After back-to-back scoreless innings from Sargent, Longwood added another in the fifth as Howard swung at the first pitch and connected on a solo shot to push the Lancers ahead 4-2.

UMBC once again pulled within a run, getting a one-out double from Okojie and a single from Brooks Henderson, bringing Wyatt up the plate. Wyatt hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Okojie before Henderson was nabbed on the bases to end the inning. The Lancers would execute a double steal in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to 5-3.

Continuing to battle, the first two Retrievers of the seventh inning reached, causing the Lancers to go to Nash out of the bullpen. Carpenter would drive in Joe Lomangino with a sacrifice fly, but Nash worked out of a jam to hold a one-run advantage. Brown added the final run of the game with a solo blast in the eighth to secure a 6-4 victory for Longwood.
