Box Score BALTIMORE - The UMBC baseball team used an 11-run first inning and a triple play in the third to propel them to a 13-7 victory over Mount St. Mary's at the Baseball Factory Field at UMBC Wednesday evening. With the win, the Retrievers improve to 8-25, while the Mountaineers fell to 15-24.
After freshman starter J.R. Seader (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) struck out three in the top of the first, the Retrievers' first six batters reached base in the bottom of the inning, capped by sophomore Max Himmelstein(Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) two-run triple to right-center field that scored sophomore Brian Klukowicz (Clifton, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) and junior Bryan Russo (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke).
Junior Rick Phillips (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) hit his third home run of the season, a two-run shot to center, UMBC added two on an error by the left fielder. Russo added a RBI double and Himmelstein drove him home with a single to give the Retrievers an 11-0 lead.
In the third inning, Mount St. Mary's Zach Helman and Alex Andrews reached on an error and a hit-by-pitch, respectively. Sophomore Sean Swetnam (Greenbelt, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt/George Mason) induced Michael Foster to line out to junior shortstop Rich Conlon (Vienna, Va./James Madison), who stepped on second and fired to first to complete the triple play.
Seader allowed three runs in two innings. Swetnam (3-2) earned the win, going 2.2 innings, allowing three runs. Freshman Samuel Bashioum (Fayette City, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) gave up just one run in 4.1 innings of relief to earn his first save.
Karl Lamont (0-2) took the loss for the Mountaineers.
The Retrievers return to action Saturday with a doubleheader at home against America East foe Albany. The first game starts at 4 p.m.
