Box Score 2 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Sophomore Michael Pesci (Parsippany, N.J./DePaul Catholic) hit a solo home run in the fourth and fellow sophomore Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) drove in junior Rick Phillips (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) in the eighth as the UMBC baseball team won the second game of a doubleheader at Navy, 2-1, Saturday afternoon to earn a split on the day. The Retrievers (4-11) fell to the Midshipmen (16-6), 1-0, in the first game.
Pesci hit his first round tripper as a Retriever, a shot down the left field line, to tie the ballgame at one in the top of the fourth. In the eighth, Phillips led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a freshman Aaron Brill (Palm Beach, Fla./John I. Leonard) sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on Pesci's second hit of the game before scoring on Himmelstein's fly ball to right.
Junior starter Austin Drewyer (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) allowed just one run on five hits in 5.2 innings of work, while senior Ed Bach (Columbia, Md./Atholton) (2-3) came on and pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief for the win.
Navy starter Zach Sipe struck out five in six innings of work allowing only Pesci's home run, while Ben Nelson (2-2) worked the final three innings, allowing one run.
In the first game, senior starter Andrew Germuth (Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding/Mount St. Mary's) (1-2) pitched a complete game and allowed only one run on a Matthew Curley RBI single in the third. Germuth finished with seven strikeouts and now has a UMBC-leading 22 on the season.
Sam Long (3-1) pitched the shutout for the Midshipmen, striking out six and allowing three hits.
The teams conclude their three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. in Annapolis, Md.
