Box Score COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) had three hits, but the UMBC baseball team fell to local rival Maryland, 8-5, Wednesday evening in College Park, Md.
Junior Bryan Russo (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) hit a RBI double to left to score Himmelstein to give the Retrievers (3-10) a 1-0 lead in the first. After the Terps (9-12) responded with one in the bottom of the inning, UMBC used two Maryland errors to score three runs in the top of the second, capped by a Himmelstein single that scored sophomore Mike Lafferty (Annapolis, Md./Mount St. Joseph/Marietta College).
In the third, sophomore Curtis Schickner (East Windsor, N.J./Lawrenceville Prep) drove in his second run of the ballgame, singling up the middle to score freshman Aaron Brill (Palm Beach, Fla./John I. Leonard).
Alfredo Rodriguez led Maryland with three hits, four RBI and three stolen bases.
Junior Marty Zawacki (Hebron, Md./James Bennett) started for the Retrievers, allowing three runs (two earned) in two innings of work, striking out two. Senior Ed Bach (Columbia, Md./Atholton) (1-3) took the loss, allowing three earned runs in three innings of work.
Maryland starter Blair Delean allowed five runs (two earned) in 2.2 innings of work. Matthew Passauer (1-0) earned the win, pitching two scoreless innings. Dan Gentzler pitched the ninth for his fifth save.
The Retrievers return to action Friday when they host Navy at 5 p.m. The two teams will play in Annapolis, Md. on Saturday and Sunday.
