Box Score WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The UMBC baseball team dropped an 18-6 decision to Bucknell Sunday evening at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Fla.
After the Bison (6-6) jumped out a 4-0 lead, the Retrievers (0-6) fought back when juniors Bryan Russo (Westbury, N.Y./Clarke) and Marty Zawacki (Hebron, Md./James Bennett) hit back-to-back RBI singles to cut the lead to 4-2.
Bucknell batted around each of the next two innings, with B.J. LaRosa leading the Bison with a home run and four RBI.
In the bottom of the fifth, Zawacki singled in junior Rick Phillips (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) before scoring on a sophomore Brian Klukowicz (Clifton, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) RBI single.
Zawacki added his third RBI of the night in the night, driving in sophomore Michael Pesci (Parsippany, N.J./DePaul Catholic) on a sac fly.
Zawacki (0-2) took the loss, allowing six runs in three-plus innings of work, striking out four. Bucknell starter Trey Frahler (2-1) struck out six in five innings of work, allowing four runs.
Four Retriever relievers, freshman Samuel Bashioum (Fayette City, Pa./Belle Vernon Area), junior David DiVita (Mayfield Village, Ohio/Mayfield), sophomore Steve Miller (Newark, Del./Dickinson) and senior Scott Wildesen(Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) pitched a scoreless inning each from the sixth inning on. Wildesen struck out two in his inning, while the other three each struck out one.
The Retrievers return to action Monday when they face Long Island at 11 a.m.
