Kapor's Brilliant Overtime Goal Gives Men's Soccer a 2-1 Victory at 23rd-Ranked Penn State

State College, Pa.—UMBC sophomore midfielder Milo Kapor (Woodbridge, Ont./Emily Carr) scored on a brilliant 26-yard shot in the 99th minute, as the visiting Retrievers defeated 23rd-ranked Penn State, 2-1.

Junior midfielder Andrew Bulls (Millersville, Md./McDonogh) gave UMBC a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute, tapping in his own rebound after breaking in alone after a deflection around the midfield stripe.

UMBC outshot the Nittany Lions, 8-5, in the first half.

Penn State (8-5-1) turned the tide in the second half, pumping 14 shots at goal. They tied the score on a controversial goal in the 77th minute. UMBC freshman back Daniel Welsh (Fife, Scotland), who played an outstanding first half, was shoved in the back as PSU's Jordan Tyler sent a ball across the box. Welsh was unable to get to the ball and Lion forward Corey Hertzog, the nation's leading scorer, tallied his 14th goal of the season, from 10 yards out.

But the Retrievers (7-4-2) dominated the overtime period and cashed in with 1:11 to play. Freshman forward Pete Caringi III (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) controlled a ball around the 25-yard line and laid it back. Kapor, who had just entered the game, took a couple of dribbles and fired to the far right post and the ball hooked in just under the crossbar.

"It was a great win against a very talented Penn State team," UMBC head coach Pete Caringi, Jr. said. "I am very proud of our players. I hope we can build on the momentum that we gained tonight."

UMBC junior netminder Dan Louisignau (Wilmington, Del/Concord/U. Virginia) made all five of his saves in the second half, as Penn State fired 14 shots toward the UMBC goal.

The Retrievers are now 5-0-0 when leading at halftime and 2-0-2 in overtime this season.

UMBC gets back to league play and will celebrate "Senior Day" when they host Hartford at UMBC Soccer Stadium on Saturday.
