Box Score 2 ALBANY, N.Y.:The UMBC baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Albany Sunday, 9-1 and 10-7, as it fell to 0-4 in America East play. The Retrievers fell to 4-18 on the season, while the Great Danes improved to 9-16.
After falling behind 8-1 after five innings in the second game, the Retrievers loaded the bases before senior Tom Meaney (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem) walked to score fellow senior Brad Brainer (Chester, Md./Kent Island/Chesapeake JC), who had led off the game with his second home run of the season. Senior Wink Nolan (Ellicott City, Md./Calvert Hall/Maryland) would score later in the inning to cut the lead to 8-3.
The Great Danes would add another run in the bottom of the sixth before the Retrievers scored four in the seventh. Freshman Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) and senior Dave Warrenfeltz (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport) each hit two-run singles, but that would be the end of the scoring for UMBC.
Starter junior Kevin Clark (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield/Catonsville C.C.) (2-1) struck out six, but suffered his first loss of the season, while Austin Chase earned the win for the Great Danes.
In the first game, Albany starter Zach Kraham pitched a three-hitter as the Great Danes scored three in the fourth and four in the fifth to win 9-1, in seven innings. Sophomore Marty Zawacki (Hebron, Md./James Bennett) (1-2) struck out two in three innings, but took the loss for UMBC.
The Retrievers return to action Tuesday when they host Navy at 6 p.m.
