Box Score 2 ORONO, Maine:The UMBC baseball team dropped a pair of games to America East rival Maine, 6-1 and 7-3, in Orono, Maine Saturday afternoon. With the losses, the Retrievers fall to 5-24 and 1-9 in America East play, while the Black Bears improve to 22-13 and 5-1 in conference play.
Senior Wink Nolan (Ellicott City, Md./Calvert Hall/Maryland) had five hits on the day between the two games, including his first home run of the season in the third inning of the second game. Fellow senior Brad Brainer (Chester, Md./Kent Island/Chesapeake JC) went 4-for-5 in the second game with a RBI, driving in senior Dave Warrenfeltz (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport), who has hit safely in five straight games.
Sophomore Austin Drewyer (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) took the loss, striking out five in seven innings while allowing four earned runs. Junior Scott Wildesen (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) pitched a scoreless eighth inning in relief. AJ Bazddanes (3-0) went seven innings for the Black Bears and allowed two runs on nine hits.
In the first game, junior Ed Bach (Columbia, Md./Atholton) (0-8) pitched a complete game and had four strikeouts, but took the loss allowing six runs. Jonathan Balentina (3-0) pitched a complete game for the Black Bears, allowing one unearned run on seven hits in picking up the win.
The two teams conclude their four-game series Sunday with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
