Box Score 2 BALTIMORE--The UMBC baseball team dropped a pair of games to Stony Brook, 9-6 and 11-5, in America East action Saturday. With the losses, the Retrievers fell to 5-22 and 1-7 in AEC play, while the Seawolves improved to 16-13 and 6-2 in conference play.
After the Seawolves struck for three in the top of the first of the first game, UMBC seniors Shawn Retz (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech/Catonsville C.C.) and Tom Meaney (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem) hit back-to-back doubles to cut the lead to two. The Retrievers tied the game when sophomores Casey Medairy (Elkridge, Md./Howard) and Rich Conlon (Vienna, Va./James Madison) scored on a throwing error by the Seawolves' third baseman.
UMBC took the lead in the bottom of the third when Meaney singled, advanced to second on a balk by Stony Brook starter Nick Tropeano and scored on a line drive double to center by freshman Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown). Stony Brook would tie it in the fourth and take the lead in the fifth on a Michael Tansey RBI double and a Keith Fier two-run single.
Conlon led of the bottom of the sixth with a walk before moving to third on a junior Dustin Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil College) double down the left field line. Conlon scored on a Medairy groundout, while Ferguson cut the lead to one on a senior Brad Brainer (Chester, Md./Kent Island/Chesapeake JC) sacrifice fly. Stony Brook concluded the scoring in the top of the seventh with a two-run home run by Tansey.
UMBC sophomore Austin Drewyer (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) (1-2) took the loss, striking out three in six innings of work, while Stony Brook starter Nick Tropeano (4-0) struck out sixth in a complete game to earn the win.
In the second game, the Seawolves chased UMBC freshman starter Brian Klukowicz (Clifton, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) (0-2) in the second inning with six runs. The Retrievers struck for two in the third when Retz launched a double to left field that scored senior Wink Nolan (Ellicott City, Md./Calvert Hall/Maryland) and Brainer.
The Retrievers scored twice in the bottom of the eighth when Himmelstein was hit by a pitch and Ferguson hit his first home run of the season, a deep shot to center, to cut the lead to 9-4. The Seawolves responded with two solo home runs in the top of the ninth before Himmelstein drove in Nolan in the bottom of the inning to conclude the scoring.
Freshman Luke DiBlasi (Pleasant Valley, N.Y./Arlington) pitched 3 and 2/3 innings of work in relief, allowing one run, while sophomore David DiVita (Mayfield Village, Ohio/Mayfield) pitched two innings, allowing two runs, one earned. Stony Brook starter Marc Brown (2-1) struck out two in 3 and 2/3 innings to earn the win.
The Retrievers return to action Wednesday when they play host to Maryland at 7 p.m. in a non-conference matchup.
