Box Score 2 WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Junior Kevin Clark (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield/Catonsville C.C.) and freshman Steve Miller (Newark, Del./Dickinson) combined for five-hitter as the UMBC baseball team defeated NJIT, 5-0, Thursday afternoon in a soggy West Palm Beach, Fla. With the win, the Retrievers moved to 3-7, while the Highlanders fell to 1-9. It was UMBC’s first shutout since a 5-0 win over Wagner on March 10, 2007.
Clark (1-0) allowed just three hits while striking out five in seven innings of work. Miller struck out two in the final two innings to seal the win for UMBC.
Senior Shawn Retz (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech/Catonsville C.C.) hit his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to right-center field, in the top of the first inning to open the scoring for the Retrievers.
After freshman Justin Lamborn (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnett Valley) walked and freshman Max Himmelstein (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) singled in the fourth, senior Tom Meaney (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem) homered to left to give UMBC a 4-0 lead. Meaney would hit a RBI double in the eighth to conclude the scoring.
The Retrievers continue play North Dakota State down in Florida Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. before playing Long Island at 2 p.m. on Friday.
