The UMBC men's cross country team placed 17th in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships, hosted by Princeton University, on Saturday afternoon. This is a two-spot improvement over last year's 19th place finish.
Sophomore Paul Zwama (Groningen, Netherlands/CSG Dingstede) led the Retrievers across the line, finishing 42nd overall in 33:48 on the 10K course. Sophomore Michael Christmas (Invercargill, New Zealand/James Hargest College) placed second for UMBC, finished 84th overall, while senior Andrew Madison (Edgewater, Md./South River) finished 94th. Sophomore Chris Bowie (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and senior Josh Okoniewski (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) rounded out the scoring five for the Retrievers.
On the women's side, junior Sara Parkinson (Lancashire, England/Loughborough University) was the top-finishing Retriever in 52nd place in a time of 23:33 on the 6K course. Junior Suzanne Gabriel (Falls Church, Va./McLean) placed 81st in time of 24:16.
