—UMBC sophomore forward Morgan Warrington (Magnolia, Del./St. Thomas Moore Prep) tallied an early goal, but the women's soccer team was kept off the scoreboard for the rest of the game as the Retrievers (2-13-0, 1-4-0 AEC) fell to America East rival Stony Brook (7-6-0, 3-1-0 AEC) by a score of 2-1 Sunday afternoon at a sun-drenched UMBC Soccer Stadium.
Warrington's goal came late in the seventh minute when freshman midfielder Danielle Kell (Willards, Md./Parkside) sent her a parallel pass, and she headed the ball into the back of the net from five yards out to give UMBC a 1-0 lead. The goal was Warrington's team-leading third of the season, equaling her total from her 2007 rookie campaign.
But the Seawolves knotted the score a little more than 18 minutes later when forward Trine Allenberg sent a corner kick to midfielder Brooke Barbuto, who booted the ball into the goal.
Despite a barrage of Stony Brook shots in the first half – the Seawolves outshot the Retrievers, 11-5, in the opening period – the tie lasted through halftime. Late in the 58th minute, Stony Brook was again awarded a corner kick. Defender Sarah Dwyer took the shot, and UMBC senior goalie Christine Bacinski (Hampstead, Md./Mount de Sales) came up with the save. But the rebound ricocheted to midfielder Holly Razzaghi, who sent the ball over Bacinski's head and into the goal to break the tie with the game-winning tally.
Bacinski made six saves for the Retrievers, while Stony Brook keeper Amanda Hemme stopped four shots.
The Seawolves outshot UMBC, 16-9, in the game, and also held a 5-1 advantage on corner kicks.
The Retrievers return to action on Thursday, when they travel to America East rival Vermont to take on the Catamounts at 2 p.m.
