Baltimore-Junior forward Jessica Young found the back of the net just more than nine minutes into the first overtime period to give the UMBC women's soccer (1-1-0) team a thrilling 2-1 victory over the visiting Rider Broncs (0-2-0) Sunday afternoon at UMBC Stadium for the Retrievers' first win of the season.

The two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half, as which Rider out-shot UMBC, 9-3, and Retriever sophomore goalie Christine Bacinski posted seven saves.

But UMBC newcomer Michelle Worrest, seeing her first game action, beat Rider goalie Kim Carter and found the back of an empty net at the 57:20 mark to put the Retrievers up, 1-0. The goal was UMBC's first of the season after going scoreless in the opener Friday night, a 1-0 loss to George Washington.

The Retrievers held onto their advantage for 17 minutes before Rider freshman Alison Brody dribbled past two defenders and beat new UMBC goalie Catie Bukowski to tie the score at the 74:47 mark.

With the score still knotted at 1-1 at the end of regulation, the game went into overtime, and in the 99th minute, Young took a feed from freshman Arielle Tagger and chipped it over Carter for the game-winner, just seconds after she had re-entered the game.

Bukowski picked up the victory after entering the game to start the second half and playing the final 54:09. She tallied four saves and allowed one goal. Bacinski did not allow a goal while stopping seven shots in the first half. Carter recorded two saves and allowed two goals for the Broncs.

Rider out-shot UMBC, 16-9, for the game, and held a 4-0 advantage on corner kicks.

The Retrievers return to action Wednesday as they travel to Farmville, Va., to take on Longwood at 5 p.m.
