Baltimore-The UMBC women's soccer team (4-7-1, 0-2-0 America East) hits the road this week for two America East contests. The Retrievers will take on Hartford on Thursday, Oct. 5 at 6 p.m. before heading to Albany on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m.
Looking Back: The Retrievers split two games last week, defeating Howard, 4-0, on Sept. 27 in Washington, D.C., before falling at home to America East rival Stony Brook, 1-0, on Oct. 1. UMBC jumped on the board early against the Bison, as sophomore back Kali Schwartz notched an unassisted goal just 4:39 into the game. Junior back Casey Smith posted her first career goal about nine minutes before halftime. The Retrievers took a 2-0 lead into halftime, and Howard goalie DeLaine Anderson was able to hold off a barrage of UMBC shots for about 30 minutes into the second period until sophomore midfielder Cara Palmer found the back of the net in the 72nd minute for her first goal of the season. Just five minutes later, freshman midfielder Arielle Tagger scored a final insurance goal to give the Retrievers the 4-0 victory. UMBC out-shot Howard, 20-5, including 13-3 in the second half. The Bison managed only two shots on goal. Despite out-shooting the Seawolves, 14-12, the Retrievers dropped their second conference game, 1-0. Stony Brook's lone goal of the game came off a corner kick in the 35th minute.
On the Hawks: Hartford (4-8-0, 2-0-0 America East) is coming off a 3-1 victory over Holy Cross on Sunday and has won two games in a row. The Hawks have defeated Albany and New Hampshire in conference play and are tied for second in the America East with six points. Meagan Riemer leads the team with eight points and is tied with Laura Guigli for the team lead in goals with three apiece. Sara Flowers has a team-best four assists, and she ranks third in the conference with 0.36 assists per game. Liz Cook has played all 1,080 minutes in goal and has posted a 1.42 goals-against average and a .750 saver percentage with 51 saves and 17 goals allowed. The Hawks have been outscored, 17-11, in 12 games this season.
Last Time vs. the Hawks: Forward Amanda DiCarlo scored in the 87th minute of play to give the Retrievers a 1-0 victory over Hartford on Oct. 6, 2005, at UMBC Stadium. Though both teams had several opportunities, the game remained scoreless until the Retrievers were awarded a corner kick, which midfielder Cara Palmer sent to senior midfielder Jessica Golibart. Golibart headed the ball to DiCarlo, who converted it for her seventh goal of the season at 86:43. Goalie Catie Bukowski recorded five saves and notched her third career shutout and second in as many games. Hartford goalkeeper Liz Cook tallied four saves. The Hawks out-shot the Retrievers, 12-9, but UMBC held a 7-4 advantage on corner kicks.
UMBC vs. Hartford All-Time: The Retrievers' win in 2005 was their first in three meetings with the Hawks. Hartford took the first two contests, 3-0 and 3-1. The teams have met every year since 2003, when UMBC joined the America East Conference.
On the Great Danes: Albany (4-8-1, 1-2-0 America East) is coming off a 1-0 loss to America East foe Binghamton on Sunday and will take on defending conference champion Boston University on Thursday in Boston before hosting the Retrievers on Sunday. The Great Danes defeated Vermont, 3-1, on Sept. 28, for their first America East victory since 2002, breaking a 31-game winless streak. Jaclyn Rosada leads the team with six goals and 13 points, while Diana Barrera ranks second in both categories with five goals and 12 points. Rosada, Barrera and teammate Jaime Dougherty are tied for second in the league with 1.00 points per game and all rank among the top five in goals per game.
Last Time vs. the Great Danes: Forwards Jessica Young and Amanda DiCarlo each scored twice for the Retrievers, who defeated Albany, 4-0, on Oct. 9, 2005, at UMBC Stadium. Young started the scoring right out of the gates for the Retrievers, knocking in a rebound off the post just 2:03 into the game. UMBC took the 1-0 advantage into halftime before Young converted a corner kick from midfielder Amy Morrison four minutes into the second period. DiCarlo added to the Retrievers' lead at the 65:14 mark, converting a pass from midfielder Andrea Perkinson to give UMBC a 3-0 advantage, then made it 4-0 UMBC at 74:50 with her ninth goal of the season. Goalie Catie Bukowski recorded one save and notched her fourth career shutout and third in as many games. The Retrievers out-shot the Great Danes, 21-2, and held a 6-0 advantage on corner kicks.
UMBC vs. Albany All-Time: The Great Danes have never scored a goal against the Retrievers, who hold a 3-0 series advantage. The teams have faced off in each of the last three years since UMBC joined the America East Conference, and the Retrievers have outscored Albany, 11-0, in those three games.
Moving Up the Ranks: Junior forward Jessica Young is tied with Kasy Kruger (1992-95) for fifth place all-time at UMBC with 23 career goals scored. She also ranks seventh all-time with 52 career points.

Goalies Galore: All four of UMBC's goalies – seniors Robin Babaris and Carly Agro and sophomores Christine Bacinski and Catie Bukowski – have started at least one game between the pipes, with Babaris, and Bukowski starting four games each. Bacinski has posted the best goals-against average (0.86 in 315:00), while Bukowski has seen the most total playing time (392:39) and Babaris has recorded the most saves (28).
Beasts in the America East: Junior forward Jessica Young is tied for fourth in the America East with five goals and 29 shots and fifth with 11 points and 0.42 goals per game, and she ranks sixth with 0.92 points per game and 2.42 shots per game. Sophomore goalie Catie Bukowski ranks ninth in the league with a .710 save percentage, 3.67 saves per game and a 2.06 GAA.
As a team, the Retrievers rank third with 6.25 saves per game, fourth with 1.33 goals per game and fifth with 3.08 points per game.
Dawg Bites: UMBC's win at Howard on Sept. 27 snapped a four-game losing streak, but the Retrievers have lost five of their last six games dating to the Kick Out Cancer Tournament on Sept. 15… Sophomore midfielder Cara Palmer tallied a career-high three points against the Bison with a goal and an assist… Junior back Casey Smith scored the first goal of her career against Howard… With a 1-0 loss to Stony Brook on Oct. 1, UMBC has been shut out six times this season, one more than the team's total from 2005… The six shutouts account for all but one of the Retrievers' losses this season… Junior forward Jessica Young leads the team with five goals and 11 points, while freshman midfielder Arielle Tagger ranks second with seven points.
