WOMEN'S SOCCER DOWNS LONGWOOD, 1-0

Baltimore, Md.-Sophomore forward Jessica Young (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) scored in the 47th minute, and the goal would be all the UMBC women's soccer team (5-4-0) would need, as the Retrievers shut out Longwood (2-6-0), 1-0, Friday evening at UMBC Stadium. The win moves UMBC over .500 for the first time this season.

After a scoreless first half highlighted by 14 combined shots and five saves by Retriever freshman goalie Catie Bukowski (Odenton, Md./Arundel/South Carolina), Young converted a pass from junior midfielder Andrea Perkinson (Laurel, Md./Laurel) for the eventual game-winner.

The goal was Young's team-leading sixth on the season, equaling her 2004 total, and it was her career-high third game-winner on the season, also tops on the team. The assist was Perkinson's first of her career.

Bukowski totaled nine saves in the net for the Retrievers, earning her first career shutout. Longwood goalie Heather Storrie recorded three saves.

The Lancers out-shot UMBC, 12-9, and held a 4-3 advantage on corner kicks.

The win was head coach Michelle Salmon's 42nd in her career, moving her to within four games of Jamie Watson as the all-time winningest women's soccer coach in UMBC history.

The Retrievers open America East Conference play on Sunday, hosting New Hampshire at 1 p.m. at UMBC Stadium.
