Radford, Va. - The UMBC Retrievers (0-8) fell in overtime to the Radford Highlanders (5-3) in women's basketball action Monday night at the Dedmon Center in Radford, Va. The Retrievers, who had three players score in double-digits, went into the overtime period with the scored tied 50-50 at the end of regulation. The Highlanders, however, jumped ahead in the extra period and were able to distance themselves behind solid free throw shooting down the stretch to take the 64-56 win.
The Highlanders, who held a 28-26 lead at the end of the first stanza, converted 11 three-pointers, including scoring their first 21 points via three-pointers, and shot 50 percent from behind the arc for the game.
Radford opened the second half with a 11-4 run to take a 39-30 lead before the Retrievers came storming back as Mariana Santos hit a trey with 2:43 remaining in regulation to bring UMBC within two, 50-48. Anastasia Goncharova converted a backdoor cut layup to tie the game at 50-50. Neither team was able to break the tie as regulation came to a close.
In overtime the Highlanders took a 56-54 lead and behind strong free throw shooting were able to distance themselves in the final minutes of the game.
The Retrievers shot higher from the field in the game hitting 38.3 percent compared to 32.1 percent by the Highlanders. Goncharova scored a team-high 16 points and teammates Maria Brown tallied 12 points and Santos racked up 10.
The Retrievers return home to take on local foe Loyola at UMBC RAC Arena on Saturday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m.
