Chapel Hill, NC--The 13th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels used a late first half run to open up a tight contest and cruised in the second half to a 76-34 win over UMBC (0-3) in women's basketball action at Carmichael Auditorium.
UMBC senior Anastasia Goncharova scored 12 of her career high 18 points in the first half. Goncharova's fourth three-point goal of the half brought UMBC to within a point at 18-17 midway through the stanza. But UNC went on a 10-1 to lead 28-18 late in the half and extended the margin to 35-21 at intermission.
The Retrievers shot just 27% from the floor in the contest and could only manage 13 second half points, and they dropped their third straight to open the campaign. Freshman Sharri Rohde had 8 points and 8 rebounds to help the UMBC effort.
