Loyola senior forward Miguel Abreu score the game-winning goal for the second straight game and led the 13th-ranked Greyhounds (3-0) to a 2-0 victory over Towson (2-2) in the title game of the Battle of Baltimore Soccer Tournament held at UMBC. Navy (3-1) defeated UMBC, (1-3), 3-1, to claim third place.
After a scoreless first half, Abreu tracked a long serve by defender Scott Barnett and pushed it into the net from close range after the ball eluded TU netminder Andy Hicks at the 52:17 mark. Loyola added an insurance goal at 72:15, when John Dalziel hooked a direct kick in from 23 yards away.
Loyola senior netminder Reb Beatty made two saves to earn the shutout and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
In the consolation game, Navy senior forward Dan Montgomery's goal, off a Ryan Peters cross with 1:48 to play broke a 1-1 tie and propelled Navy to a 3-1 victory. Junior forward Matt Sanchez, who had given the Mids a 1-0 lead at 17:19, scored the third goal with 30 seconds left as UMBC netminder Brian Rowland left the net with the Retrievers pressing for the tying goal. UMBC''s Derek McElligott ended a day's worth of frustration for UMBC, when he tied the game on an 18-yard shot with 8:07 to play. Despite outshooting Navy, 17-6, the Mids came away with third place
