PENDER POURS IN 28; WOMEN'S HOOPS DOWNS WAGNER, 77-62

Baltimore, MD - - -UMBC freshman guard Matea Pender scored a career-high 28 points to lead the host Retrievers to a 77-62 victory over visiting Wagner, Saturday evening at UMBC RAC Arena. Leading 33-26 at halftime, the Retrievers (6-9, 2-4 NEC) extended their lead to 14 points with a 7-0 run to open the second half. The Seahawks (6-10, 4-3 NEC) would get as close as nine points at 47-38 with 13:57 remaining as center Meredith Kerns converted a lay-up. However, the Retrievers answered with another 7-0 run to push the lead back to 16 points as Pender capped the run with a lay-up at the 11:30 mark. UMBC would lead by as many as 20 points as Pender converted another lay-up with 6:19 remaining in the contest. The 77 points equaled a season-high for UMBC, who shot forty-one percent from the floor for the contest. The Retrievers were 7-12 (58%) from three-point range and 16-18 (89%) from the foul line. Wagner, who was outrebounded by a 40-35 margin, shot forty-two percent from the floor but were forced into 22 turnovers compared to 16 for the hosts. Pender was 10-17 from the floor and added 7 rebounds and a career-high 6 steals. JR guard Jessie Brown added 18 points and 7 assists. Kerns led the Seashawks with 26 points on 12-24 shooting.
