Track & Field Heads to Penn State National Open

The UMBC Track & Field program continues its indoor season at the two-day Penn State National Open this Friday and Saturday at the Multi-Sport Facility & Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.

Katie Schwaner was named the America East Women's Track Performer of the Week, the Conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.

This past weekend at the Dr. Sander Scorcher in New York City, Schwaner set a massive personal record of 2:10.66 in the 800m for number two in school history and the fastest time in the America East conference by four seconds.

Both Justin Banks and Ojigwe Olua also earned America East weekly honors.

Banks was named the Track Performer of the Week after he finished 10th in the 1 Mile (Invitational) in 4:05.51 at the Dr. Sander Scorcher, the best time in the America East so far this season by nearly three seconds.

Olua was named the Rookie of the Week after he won the 60m hurdles with a time of 7.91. It was the top time in the America East, and he is the only sub-8 second performer.

The 4x4 (Invitational) relay team of Rhema NkwochaJustin FeblesKemarley Hibbert and Jacob Martin won the silver in a time of 3:13.47.

Alim Raji took 10th in th 200m (Invitational) in a time of 23.06, while Simon Essono used a time of 22.45 to take sixth in the Open portion of the event. 

Xavier Gooden was UMBC's top finisher in the shot put with a throw of 13.83m.

Charliana Dacosta took ninth in the 200m (seeded) in a time of 25.15, while Ruth Ayuk-Takor finished 11th in the Invitational portion of the event in a time of 26.24. In the Open portion of the 200m, Jayda Solomon (25.24), Miyana Johnson (25.63) and Dalyce Schmidt (25.86) took spots 2, 5 and 6.

Lilly Norcross used a time of 5:01.97 to finish ninth in the 1 Mile (Open), and Gabby Millwood took 12th in the long jump (Open) with a jump of 4.91.

The 4x4 Relay (Invitational) team of Lily BandyLeanne McDonald, Solomon and Anna Creel took fifth in a time of 3:46.35.

Chia Nwankwo finished sixth in shot put (Open) with a throw of 12.83, while Marie Abongwa took 13th (12.13).
