Washington, D.C. -- The trio of
Ember Stennett,
Alicia Buteau and
Isabella Evers swept the podium in both diving events, while newcomer
Alice Marini won a pair of events in her Retriever debut as the UMBC Women's Swimming & Diving team opened the season on Friday night at American.
The Dawgs held a furious rally in the second half of the meet to overcome a big deficit, but American won the final relay to take the victory, 155-147.
Stennett (246.15), Buteau (230.32) and Evers (214.87) opened the meet with a clean sweep in the three meter, before the trio again went 1-2-3 in the one meter with Buteau (235.20) winning, followed by Stennett (220.65) and Evers (218.85).
Marini won both the 200 back (2:06.31) and the 200 IM (2:09.82), and took second in both the 100 back and as a member of the 200 medley relay.
Ashley Gutshall won the 50 free with a time of 24.10, while
Breanna Smith (2:09.86),
Ula Parrill (2:27.21) and
Daphné Melis (2:27.99) took the top three spots in the 200 breaststroke.
Kolby Reese was victorious in the 500 free in a time of 5:13.62.
Smith also took second in the 200 IM behind Marini, with ShannynLambert taking third.Â
The Retrievers host Navy and William & Mary next weekend at 11 a.m.
