Box Score High Point, N.C. – The UMBC women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision against the High Point Panthers on Thursday evening at Vert Stadium
The Retrievers (2-4) turned in a solid defensive effort but could not overcome High Point's stellar backline. UMBC was outshot 14-1 in the contest.
Graduate student forward Tessa Carlin scored the only goal that the hosts would need just 1:43 into the match as she chipped in a seven-yard shot over the head of Retrievers' starting senior goalkeeper
Abbey Cowles. Graduate student defender Alex DePerno was credited with the assist after sending a long service into the box from well beyond the midfield line. Carlin caught up to the pass by racing past the UMBC defense and sent a right-footed shot into the upper left corner of the net after Cowles had moved off her line.
UMBC's lone chance of the contest came with just over 21 minutes left in the opening half as sophomore midfielder
Maddie Schepers headed a corner kick off the foot of senior
Alyssa Clearfield toward the far post. However, High Point keeper Aubrey Mckessy was up for the task on the attempt from the top of the box.
The Panthers (3-4-1) added an insurance marker in the 65th minute as sophomore midfielder Meg Roden beat reserve junior goalie
Sara Gavagan from point-blank range just moments after a corner kick.
Gavagan made the save of the night with 9:20 left to thwart another chance for High Point as she leaped to secure a bullet shot from 25-yards out by senior forward Emily Mashinski.
UMBC will travel to another Big South foe, Longwood, on Sunday afternoon.
