Men's Soccer Explodes For Three Late First Half Goals; Retrievers Down Niagara 4-0

Box Score

BALTIMORE - The host UMBC men's soccer team scored three goals in a span of three minutes and fifty-five seconds late in the first and defeated the Niagara Purple Eagles, 4-0, on Friday evening at Retriever Soccer Park in the UMBC/Navy Invitational. Navy and FDU played to a scoreless tie in the other game.

"One of the things we've been talking about is taking what the other team is giving us," said UMBC Head Coach Anthony Adams."We hit our stride in the back end of the first half and had some great moments against a tough and gritty Niagara team. "I was really happy to see Ryan Calheira get on the board with two goals as well as Spencer {Hanks) and Robbie {Ryerson|

Sophomore forward Ryan Calheira scored the first two goals in a stretch of just twenty-five seconds, the game-winner coming with 8:24 left in the opening half. Alek Wroblewski played a ball through the legs of a Niagara defender to Calheira just outside the top of the right side of the box. Purple Eagles' keeper Jamie Berry charged off his line, but Calheira was able to deposit the ball into the lower left corner of the goal. Just seconds later, Calheira caught up to a ball that was misplayed by a defender and knocked in a low shot just inside the near post from the right side of the box.

"It feels amazing to score two goals at home and help the team win," Calheira stated. "I wouldn't have been able to do it without my team having my back and staying positive. Scoring two goals that quickly has never happened for me before."

Senior forward Spencer Hanks added the final first half tally in the 41st minute.

Senior forward Alek Wroblewski recorded a pair of assists, while junior defender Ricky Schissler, sophomore defender Jojo Ocran, and junior goalie Emigdio Tormo Lopez were all credited with helpers.

Junior forward Robbie Ryerson added his first career tally late in the second half on UMBC's sixth assist of the night, this time from defender Hans Nesheim

UMBC improved to 2-0-1, while the Purple Eagles fell to 0-3.

The Retrievers outshot Niagara by a 17-9 margin. Tormo Lopez made five saves to collect his second victory of the season.

The Dawgs will host FDU on Monday evening at 5:00 p.m.
