DAWG BYTES
  • Junior midfielder Joseph Picotto headed in a cross from graduate student defender Hans Nesheim in the 87th minute to give UMBC a 1-1 draw against the Maryland Terrapins on Thursday evening at Retriever Soccer Park.
  • UMBC fell behind with 5:50 remaining as sophomore forward Luke Van Heukelum tapped in a cross from the right corner of the box by William Kulvic. Cameron Gerber was also credited with an assist as he found Kulvic to initiate the play.
  • The Retrievers, however, answered right back just 2:29 later as Nesheim delivered a gorgeous cross from the right side into the box for Picotto, who beat flat-footed Maryland goalkeeper Laurin Mack from five yards out into the lower left corner.
  • UMBC recorded 14 shots in the contest and gave the visitors 12 chances.  Corner kicks were even at three apiece.
  • Retrievers' junior keeper Emigdio Tormo Lopez made five saves in 90 minutes of action while Mack turned two shots aside.
  • The Retrievers had three outstanding opportunities to take the lead before the Terrapins opened the scoring. Senior forward Spencer Hanks delivered a strike that went just wide with 29:02 left, and senior forward Alek Wroblewski had a step in the box but sent a shot directly at Mack.  Sophomore forward Ryan Calheira just misfired on a header with 12:44 left after another great cross by Nesheim.
   A GLANCE AT THE BISON
  • Howard University men's soccer team fell in its season opener at Delaware (UD), 3-0.
  • Despite taking more corner kicks than the Blue Hens, 6-4, HU was unable to capitalize on its 10 shot attempts. Two-time All-NEC selection Bryson Baker led the charge with four shots.
  • Nearly 20 minutes into the contest, UD's Carlos Fernandez found Marius Stenner and gave the Blue Hens a 1-0 advantage.
  • Eight minutes later, Stenner scored his second goal of the match before intermission, thanks to an assist from Jan Schroeder, 2-0.
  • In the second half, Schroeder recorded his second assists of the day after setting up Sam Donnellan for the squad's third score, 3-0.
  • DMV graduate Jackson Lewis took a pair of shot attempts in the loss.
