Box Score New Rochelle, NY – Senior forward
Izzy Binko scored early in the second half to lift the visiting UMBC women's soccer team to a 1-0 non-conference victory against the Iona Gaels at Mazzella Field on Sunday afternoon.
"After a long week where we played nearly three and a half games in duration, it was a tremendous effort by the team to pull out a great result on the road against a very resilient Iona team," UMBC Head Coach
Rick Stainton said. "We were able to use our depth and keep a consistent level. I'm extremely happy for the team that their consistent efforts were rewarded. We are looking forward to building on this! "
Senior back
Lauren Reid initiated the game-winning play by delivering a long through ball from well past midfield. Binko raced down the center of the pitch and then collected the ball at the top of the box. Iona reserve goalkeeper Savannah Rogers charged off her line, allowing Binko to take one dribble around Rogers to her left and then tap in an easy conversion with the net left unattended.
UMBC, who improved to 1-2, dominated the opening half but could not get one past Gaels' starting keeper Kayla Kalbaugh. Binko had a golden opportunity with 24:20 left in the stanza but missed just wide right after streaking down the left sideline with a head of steam. In the 38th minute,
Abby Joseph eluded a couple of defenders and sprinted down the center of the field, but a Gael made a sliding tackle inside the box to thwart the chance.
Iona (0-2-2) nearly got on the board with 41:40 left in the second half as Mia Davis curled an attempt just wide right of the far post from the left side of the box.
The Retrievers, who blanked Iona last season in Baltimore, survived some late danger as the Gales had a couple of chances inside the box. Twice, the ball bounced free just inches from the goal, but the hosts could not get a foot on a potential equalizer against freshman
Amara Codd, who played the final half to record her first career win.
Codd and starting goalie
Abbey Cowles each made a pair of saves for the Dawgs, who outshot the Gaels by a 15-12 margin.
Iona took six corner kicks, while the Retrievers had three opportunities.
UMBC will return to action on Thursday evening against Drexel at Retriever Soccer Park.
