Sargent and Downs Help Baseball Complete Sweep of Defending America East Champion Maine

BALTIMORE -- Pitchers Eddie Sargent and Sam Downs combined to strike out 12 batters while allowing just two total runs as the UMBC Baseball team completed the three-game sweep of defending America East Champion Maine with a 4-2 win on Friday night.

Each pitcher allowed just a run while striking out six, with Sargent getting the start and working 4.1 innings. Downs worked the final 4.2 innings of relief to pick up the win.

How it Happened:
  • In the first, Dawson Baracani walked and Justin Taylor was hit by a pitch to start the inning.
  • Matt Ryan then ripped an RBI double to put UMBC (21-19, 11-7 AE) up 1-0
  • Danny Wyatt then made it 3-0 with a two-triple to score Taylor and Ryan
  • Sargent got into trouble in the top of the second as Maine had two on with one out, but the lefty got a 1-4-3 double play to end the inning
  • In the bottom of the second, Derek Paris singled with one out, stole second, and then scored on a Baracani triple
  • The Black Bears got a run back in the fifth, and then another in the eighth, but Downs got a ground out to strand runners at the corner.
  • In the ninth, Downs gor the first two batters out, but the tying run came to the plate after a walk
  • Downs got a strikeout to end the contest and complete the sweep
  • Matthew Best had the other hit for UMBC
Next, the Retrievers will play a pair of mid-week road games. They travel to Georgetown on Tuesday, followed by a trip to Delaware State on Wednesday
