BALTIMORE -- The UMBC offense exploded for 15 runs, while
Jayden Shertel was once again masterful on the mound, as the Retrievers downed visiting Maine, 15-1, on Friday afternoon.
Shertel pitch seven strong innings, allowing just one run on four hits, while striking out six and walking one.
Dawson Baracani went 3-for-4 with four RBI and four runs scored, and
Anthony Swenda went 4-for-4 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored. Dating back to an eight inning hit-by-pitch on Sunday at UMass Lowell, Swenda has reached base 11-straight plate appearances.
Justin Taylor,
Matt Ryan and
Nick Pratt all drove in two runs,
Luke Trythall and
Derek Paris each had an RBI, and
Kyle Eddington scored three runs.
How It Happened:
- After a scoreless first, UMBC (20-19, 10-7) exploded for six runs in the second
- Swenda hit a leadoff double and would score on a Trythall single
- Paris then drove in a run on a grounder, and Baracani would then break it open with a three-run triple to make it 5-0
- Taylor capped the scoring for the inning with an RBI single
- Eddington singled with two outs in the third, moved to second on a wild pitch and then scored on a Baracani single
- Baracani then advanced ot second on a wild pitch and scored on a Taylor single
- Swenda hit a leadoff homer in the fourth to make it 9-0
- The Black Bears got a run back in the sixth on a solo homer, but that was the only blemish for Shertel the rest of the way
- Ryan singled home Baracani in the bottom half of the seventh, and then Pratt would have a two-run pinch-hit single to make it 12-1
- Zach Kelly came in from the bullpen and pitched a scoreless top of the eighth, before the Retrievers added three more runs in the bottom of the inning
- Ryan and Swenda both drew bases loaded walks and then a double play ball scored the 15th and final run
- Sam Bell worked a scoreless ninth to close out the win
The two teams will conclude the series tonight at 8 p.m.
