Box Score Albany, NY – The No. 3 seeded UMBC men's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaker in the America East Conference semifinals, falling to the No. 2 seeded Vermont Catamounts, 10-8, Thursday afternoon at Bob Ford Field at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium.
Senior attackman Brian Tregoning (6 ground balls, assist) and junior linemate Jordan Galloway paced the Retrievers with two goals each. Senior Jayson Tingue made nine saves in his final game as a Retriever. Senior attacker Mike Doughty added a goal and a helper and moved into a tie for 10th place on UMBC's all-time assists list with 73 handouts.
Vermont scored the final five goals of the contest, including three in the final 2:33 to pull out the come-from-behind victory.
UMBC (5-7) took an 8-5 advantage with 4:48 remaining in the third quarter when sophomore midfielder Nick Gutierrez found senior attacker Allen Hockenberry in front of the net. Hockenberry delivered a gorgeous, behind-the-back shot that trickled past Catamounts' goalie George Egan (15 saves), the league's Goalkeeper of the Year.
Vermont (8-7) started their run with a goal at the 2:37 mark of the third quarter as Tristan Whitaker (3 goals) beat Tingue to make it 8-6.
The Catamounts trimmed the deficit to 8-7 with 10:56 remaining in the contest as Charlie Pope, the America East Offensive Player of the Year, scored his 41st goal.
Whitaker brought Vermont even with 2:33 left, and then Max Frattaroli (3 goals) gave the Catamounts their first lead off the afternoon, 9-8, just 14 ticks later after a face-off win by Henry Dodge.
UMBC had an opportunity to equalize, but Eddie Schwasnick intercepted a long pass with 42 seconds remaining, leading to an open net goal by Jack Fitch to put the game away with 21 seconds left.
The Retrievers jumped out to a 3-0 advantage just 4:38 into the contest as Tregoning scored two quick goals, but Vermont went on a 5-2 spurt to tie the game at intermission.
UMBC scored the first three goals of the third quarter to build their second three-goal advantage of the contest.
Vermont will take on the UAlbany/Merrimack winner in the championship game on Saturday afternoon.
