11 Unanswered Runs Rallies Baseball Past Host UMass Lowell

Lowell, Mass. -- The UMBC Baseball team scored 11 unanswered runs to turn a 5-1 fifth inning deficit into a 12-5 win on Saturday afternoon at UMass Lowell.

Danny Wyatt went 3-for-4, stole two bases and was one of three Retrievers with two RBI on the contest, joining Luke Trythall and Derek Paris.

Matthew Best, Matt Ryan and Anthony Swenda also drove in runs for UMBC, while Best, Trythall and Justin Taylor all had two-hit games. Kyle Eddington also had a hit for the Retrievers.

Nick Remy improved to 2-2 on the season with two solid innings out of the bullpen. Sam Downs pitched the final four innings of the contest, holding the River Hawks off the scoreboard, to pick up his second save.

How it Happened:
  • UML got three runs in the first, but UMBC responded in the second when Best singled, moved to second on an error, went to third on a Wyatt single and then scored on an error.
  • The hosts added single runs in the third and fourth to take a 5-1 lead into the fifth
  • The Retrievers then exploded for six runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead for good
  • Eddington hit a leadoff single, which was followed by a Dawson Baracani walk and a Taylor single to load the bases
  • Ryan made it 5-2 when he beat out a double play ball to drive in Eddington
  • Swenda, Trythall and Best then hit back-to-back-to-back RBI singles to tie the game
  • Wyatt was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, and UMBC promptly took the lead on a Paris RBI singles
  • The final run of the inning scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-5
  • After Logan Wiley entered and worked a scoreless bottom of the fifth, UMBC added two more runs in the sixth on RBI singles from Trythall and Wyatt
  • It remained 9-5 until the eighth when the Retrievers plated three more
  • Wyatt hit a bases loaded single to make it 10-5, and that was followed by a Paris sacrifice fly to make it 11-5
  • A succesfull double steal, Wyatt of second and Best of home, made it 12-5.
The rubber game of the series will be Sunday at noon
