Jayson Tingue tied a career-high with 15 saves and classmate
Mike Doughty tallied three goals and an assist as the UMBC Men's Lacrosse team cruised to a 13-6 win over NJIT on Senior Day.
The Retrievers out-shot the visitors 55-33, won the ground ball battle 33-27 and forced 13 turnovers.
Brian Tregoning had two goals, and eight other Retrievers scored a goal. Tingue had six ground, while classmate
Ben Stephanos had four ground balls and two caused turnover.
How it Happened:
- Doughty broke open the scoring just 1:11 into the contest, and Zach Dudley promptly won the ensuing faceoff and scored just seconds later to make it 2-0
- Tingue stopped a 2-0 NJIT break in transition and UMBC was able to take advantage by scoring three straight on goals from Jordan Galloway, Brendan Kennedy and Trey Fleece to push the lead to 5-0
- The Highlanders scored the final goal of the first quarter and the first goal of the second quarter to cut the deficit to 5-2
- Nick Gutierrez and Tregoning both tallied to extend the lead back to five, at 7-2, before the guests scored a late goal to make it 7-3 at the half
- Mateo Brown opened the second half scoring, but NJIT quickly responded.Â
- Dane Hall scored with 1:44 left in the third, and Ryan Demato tallied with 4.5 seconds left in the frame to make it 10-4 heading into the final frame
- The Highlanders halved the deficit but Tregoning and Doughty quickly answered to make it 12-5
- NJITÂ once again cut the lead in half, but Doughty completed his hat trick with 90 seconds left to close out the scoring.Â
The Retrievers close out the regular season at Vermont next weekend.Â
