Ryan Leads Baseball to 12-7 Win Over UAlbany to Complete Sweep

BALTIMORE -- Matt Ryan went 3-for-4 with a walk, a homer, two RBI and three runs scored to lead the UMBC Baseball team to a 12-7 victory over visiting UAlbany on Sunday to complete the three-game sweep.

All nine starters for UMBC (14-15, 6-3 AE) had at least one hit, and seven of them also scored at least one run.

Matthew Best also homered as he went 2-for-5, and Justin Taylor, Luke Trythall and Dawson Baracani all also had two-hit games.

Sam Daniels pitched two scoreless innings of relief to pick up his second win of the season, while Eddie Sargent worked a perfect ninth, with two strikeouts, to close out the game.

How It Happened:
  • After UAlbany took a 1-0 lead in the first, Best and Ryan singled and Trythall drew a walk to load the bases with two outs.
  • Danny Wyatt then gave the Dawgs the lead with a a two-run double to make it 2-1
  • The Great Danes would tie it up in the second, however, after a leadoff walk and a pair of singles.
  • Logan Wiley would then get a double play and a strikeout to keep the game tied
  • Best hit a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the second to give UMBC the lead back for good.
  • Taylor then drew a walk and then Ryan followed with a two-run blast to make it 5-2
  • The visitors would again quickly respond, this time with two runs in the top of the third, but Wiley again ended the inning with a strikeout to strand a pair in scoring position
  • After a scoreless bottom of the third, Daniels entered and worked a scoreless fourth
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Taylor led-off with a bunt single and Ryan followed with a single of his own.
  • Taylor tagged up and went to third on an Anthony Swenda fly out, before Trythall loaded the bases when the UAlbany catcher dropped the third strike and his throw to get Trythall at first went in the dirt for an error.
  • After a pop up for the second out, the Dawgs would take advantage of the error by plating seven unearned runs
  • Baracani made it 7-4 with a two-RBI single, and Nico Ong followed with a two-run double of his own to make it 9-4
  • Kyle Eddington made it 10-4 with an RBI single, and after a Best walk, Taylor extended the lead to 12-4 with a two-RBI double to right
  • The Great Danes would get a run back in the fifth on an error and another two in the eighth, but that would be as close they came
The Retrievers conclude the five-game homestand on Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Georgetown.
