Shertel Delivers Another Stellar Start on Saturday at Lamar

Beaumont, Texas -- Jayden Shertel delivered his third straight start of allowing two earned runs or less, but the UMBC Baseball team dropped a 4-0 decision at Lamar on Saturday.

Shertel went 6.1 innings and allowed just two earned runs, while striking out four and allowing just five hits. Sam Daniels came on in relief and pitched the final 1.2 innings, striking out two and retiring the final five batters he faced.

Lamar jumped out to a 1-0 in the first, and it would stay that way all the way until the sixth. In the top of the sixth, the Retrievers put two in scoring positions with one down, but had some bad luck as an Anthony Swenda liner was caught by the shortstop and the runner was doubled off second to end the frame. The Cardinals would double their lead in the bottom half of the inning when an error allowed an unearned run to score.

The hosts would plate two more in the seventh, only one earned, and UMBC could not complete a comeback in the final two innings.

Derek Paris singled in the sixth to extend his hitting streak to five games, and he has now recorded at least one hit in eight of UMBC's 10 games this season.

Swenda added a double in the first, while Nick Pratt and Matt Ryan each added singles of their own later in the contest,

The series finale will begin at 2 p,m. on Sunday on ESPN+.
