Ryan and Taylor Each Have a Strong Day at the Plate on Sunday at Lamar

Beaumont, Texas– Matt Ryan and Justin Taylor each went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, but it wasn't enough as host Lamar scored eight unanswered to defeat the UMBC Baseball team, 10-3, on Sunday afternoon..

Samuel Downs was once again solid on the mound, he did allow his first two earned runs of the season, but mostly kept the Cardinals offense in check, allowing three runs (two earned), while striking out five in five innings. He left with the game tied at three after the fifth inning.

The Retrievers took a 3-2 lead in the third when Taylor hit an RBI single, Ryan beat out a double play ball for an RBI to tie it, and Matthew Best followed with a two-out RBI single to score Taylor.

Lamar would tie the game in the fourth on a two RBI single, but that's all they could get off Downs, before they were able to breakthrough against the UMBC bullpen.

Dawson Baracani, Jesiah Carpenter, Nico Ong also had hits for the Retrievers, while Joe Pucek came on in relief to work a scoreless eighth.

The Retrievers have a quick turnaround as they come back to Maryland for a Tuesday afternoon road game at Towson. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
