Paris’ Three-Hit Day Not Enough as Lamar Uses Late Push to Get Past Baseball

Beaumont, Texas– Derek Paris went 3-for-5 with an RBI, but it wasn't enough as host Lamar used a four-run eighth to pull away and win, 7-3, over the UMBC Baseball team on Friday night.

Dawson Baracani went 1-for-2 with a double, a pair of walks and two runs scored, while Justin Taylor went 2-for-3 with an RBI as well. Nick Pratt also drove in a run with an RBI single in the fourth.

Luke Johnson pitched well, striking out eight, walking one and allowing just three earned runs in 6.2 innings of work.

Lamar took a 1-0 lead in the first on a solo homer, before Pratt tied it with an RBI single that scored Matt Ryan in the fourth. The Cardinals immediately responded in the bottom half of the inning with a solo homer to re-take the lead.

Taylor knotted things at two in the fifth with an RBI single, before the hosts once again pushed across a run in the bottom half to go back ahead. It remained 3-2 until the eighth when Lamar scored four runs to extend the lead to 7-2. UMBC got one back in the ninth when Baracani doubled and scored on a Paris single, but that would be as close as the Dawgs would get.

Ryan, Matthew Best and Jesiah Carpenter also had hits for UMBC

UMBC and Lamar play game two of the series on Saturday at 6:00 PM EST on ESPN +
