Men's Lacrosse to Host No. 17 Richmond on Friday

The action gets underway at 4:00 p.m. at UMBC Stadium

UMBC vs. Richmond NotesĀ 

UMBC (1-2) plays it final non-conference contest of the 2024 season when they entertain the 17th-ranked Richmond Spiders (3-2) on Friday, March 8. The opening face-off is set for 4:00 p.m. and the game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Gary Stein on the call.Ā

  • Host Towson (4-2) scored six consecutive goals in the second quarter to take command and went on to defeat UMBC (1-2), 17-7, in a non-conference contest at rainy Unitas Stadium on March 2.
  • Senior attackman Mateo Brown was the lone multiple-goal UMBC scorer with a pair of markers, while three players- senior attackmen Mike Doughty and Brian Tregoning, along with junior midfielder Jordan Galloway contributed a goal and two assists apiece.
  • Senior midfielder Brendan Kennedy tallied his first career goal.

  • Mike Doughty has produced three multiple-assist games in three outings and is ranked sixth nationally with 3.67 assists per game. He averages more than one assist per game (47a/34gp) in his Retriever career. He just hit the 80-point mark (34-47-81) and needs three assists to become UMBC's first player to reach 50 since Max Maxwell (66 career assists) achieved the mark in 2016.Ā 
  • Doughty (3-11-14) leads the Retrievers in scoring, while Tregoning (8-3-11) is the team leader in goals scored.
  • The America East Conference named Tregoning as its Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts at Mount St. Mary's on Feb. 24.
  • Senior face-off specialist Zach Dudley won 10 face offs versus Towson and has moved into sixth place on UMBC's all-time leaderboard with 294 draws won.
  • The Retrievers are tied for ninth nationally, hitting on 50.0 percent (6/12) of its man-up opportunities.
  • UMBC has outscored its three opponents, 12-4, in the third quarter in 2024.

  • No. 17 Richmond is 3-2, with wins over Robert Morris, St. John's and Binghamton and narrow defeats to then No. 6 Maryland, (12-11, 2ot) and then No. 3 Virginia 14-10).
  • After falling behind 5-2, the Spiders overwhelmed Binghamton, 19-10, at Robins Stadium on March 2. Senior attackman Luke Grayum scored seven goals in the game and is tied for 19th nationally with 15 goals in five games (3.0 per game).
  • Senior linemate Dalton Young is tied for 11th in the country with 15 assists in five contests (3.0 per game).
  • UR is ranked sixth nationally, averaging 16.2 goals per game.

SERIES NOTES
  • This will be the eighth meeting between UMBC and Richmond and the Spiders hold a 4-3 series advantage.
  • The last two contests have been played at UR, with the hosts winning both games. In the last meeting, Richmond defeated UMBC, 14-9, in 2022. Galloway and Tregoning scored two goals each for UMBC.
  • In the last meeting at UMBC Stadium, UMBC upset No. 20 Richmond, 9-6 on Feb. 10, 2018.
  • The Retrievers are 2-1 versus Richmond in Baltimore.
