Baseball Extends Winning Streak to Eight With 21-8 Win Over Coppin State

BALTIMORE -- The UMBC Baseball team rallied from an early four-run deficit to defeat visiting Coppin State, 21-8, on Tuesday to extend its winning streak to eight games.

The Retrievers found themselves down 6-2 in the third, and then 7-4 in the fourth, but rattled off 17 straight runs to pull away.

Chris Ho picked up the win in relief for UMBC (10-11, 3-0 AE), while Dawson Baracani, Matt Ryan, Anthony Swenda and Danny Wyatt all drove in three runs in the win.

Justin Taylor scored four runs and made five plate appearances, but did not record a single at bat as he walked three times and was hit by a pitch twice.

The 21 runs were the most UMBC scored in a game since a 20-8 win against Delaware State on 3/6/21.

How it Happened:
  • Coppin State jumped on top 2-0 in the first inning on a two-run homer
  • UMBC responded in the bottom half of the inning when Taylor walked, stol second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and then scored on a two out error
  • The Eagles made it 3-1 in the top of the third, but the Retrievers again answered in the bottom half after Matthew Best walked and would eventually score on a Kyle Eddington sacrifice fly
  • CSU put up three in the top of the third to go up 6-2, but in the bottom of the inning Taylor and Swenda drew back-to-back walks, and then both scored on a Ryan double
  • Coppin State pushed the lead back to 7-4 in the fourth, but UMBC would plate five in the bottom half without a hit
  • Baracani was hit by a pitch to start the inning, Derek Paris then walked and Taylor was hit by a pitch to load the bases
  • Swenda, Ryan, Luke Trythall and Wyatt then each drew RBI walks in succession and Ryan would score on a wild pitch to make it 9-7 UMBC
  • After Joe Pucek worked a perfect top of the fifth, The Retrievers exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the inning
  • Paris beat out an infield single to leadoff the inning, followed Taylor being hit by another pitch. Pinch-runner Jesiah Carpenter would then score from second on a Swenda single to make it 10-7
  • Two batters later a Trythal ripped an RBI single through the right side, and Wyatt welcomed a new pitcher by smacking a two run double that made it 13-7
  • Later on in the inning, Baracan came up with the bases loaded and drove in all three on a double, before immediately scoring on a Carpenter RBI single
  • Swenda would add a sacrifice fly later in the inning to cap the scoring for the frame as UMBC suddenly led 18-7
  • It would remain 18-7 until the eighth when Nick Pratt hit an RBI double to score Luke Buscaglia, followed by an RBI groundout from Gabriel Ruiz that scored Michael Joseph
  • Eddington made it 21-7 with a two out RBI single to score Pratt
  • The Eagles would get one back in the top of the ninth, but a double play ended the game.
  • Shane Murphy, Joshua Rivera and Ben Craig all joined Pucek with a scoreless inning out of the bullpen
The Retrievers will return to America East play on Friday afternoon at Bryant
