Smithfield, R.I. --
Kyle Eddington went 3-for-4 with an RBI, but a 2-out error in the eight allowed host Bryant to pull ahead and win, 4-3, on Frday afternoon's America East series opener.
Logan Wiley took the tough luck loss, allowing just the unearned run in two innings of work.
Luke Johnson struck out six and allowed three runs in six innings pitched for UMBC (10-12, 3-1 AE). Johnson's fifth strikeout was the 231st of his career, making him UMBC's all-time leader.
Justin Taylor and
Matthew Best had multi-hit days for the Retrievers, who saw their eight game winning-streak snapped.
How it Happened:
- UMBC got on the board in the top of the second when Baracani drew a two-out walk, moved to second on a balk and scored on an Eddington single
- Bryant would tie the game up in the third, and then score twice in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead
- The Retrievers answered right back in the seventh, as Best and Taylor hit back-to-back RBI singles to tie the game.
- With two outs in the eight, Bryant had a runner at second who attempted to steal third. The throw to third got away from UMBC allowing the run to score
- The Retrievers put the first two on in the ninth, but couldn't capitalize.
The two teams will play a traditional doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
