Offense Explodes as Baseball Run-Rules Yale to Win Series

BALTIMORE – Dawson Baracani hit a grand slam and drove in six, while Matt Ryan went 3-for-4 with a homer, four RBI and four runs scored as the UMBC Baseball team defeated Yale via run-rule, 16-5, in eight innings on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Sam Downs continued his impressive start to the season, picking up the win after allowing just three earned runs in six innings while striking out five and walking one.

Anthony Swenda went 2-for-4 with five runs scored and an RBI, while leadoff man Justin Taylor went 3-for-6 with two runs, an RBI and a stolen base.

How it Happened:
  • Yale jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Dawgs answered back with a run on an RBI single from Luke Trythall.
  • It was 3-1 until the bottom of the third when UMBC took the lead for good
  • Taylor and Swenda both singled to start the inning, and a walk to Ryan loaded the bases
  • Matthew Best then drove in a run on a grounder to cut the deficit to 3-2
  • Baracani then came to the plate and blasted his grand slam to put the Retrievers up 6-3
  • The Bulldogs responded with two in the top of the fourth (one earned), but UMBC pushed the lead back to three after Baracani and Jayden Shertel each drew two out, bases loaded walks
  • It remained 8-5 until the seventh when Taylor's RBI double scored Danny Wyatt to make it 9-5
  • Two batters later, Ryan ripped a two-run double to push the lead to 11-5
  • Jesiah Carpenter and Baracani hit back-to-back sacrifice flies to give UMBC a 13-5 advantage
  • Kyle Eddington doubled with one out in the eighth and moved to third on a Taylor single
  • Swenda drove in Eddington by beating out a double play ball to make it 14-5
  • Ryan then ended the game via run-rule with a walk-off two-run homer
  • Matt Cunningham and Sam Bell each worked a scoreless inning of relief
The Retrievers travel to Maryland Eastern Shore on Tuesday before returning home to face Delaware State on Wednesday. Both games are slated for 3 p.m.
