Shertel Pitches Gem as Baseball Splits with Yale on Saturday

BALTIMORE -- Jayden Shertel continued his impressive start to the season on the mound as he pitched seven scoreless, striking out eight and walking just two to help the UMBC Baseball team earn a split with visiting Yale on Saturday at Alumni Field

After the Bulldogs took the first game, 10-5, Shertel delivered his shining performance en route to a 7-0 victory in game two.

In game one, Yale broke open a 1-1 tie with four runs in each the sixth and seventh. UMBC attempted to rally with four in the eighth, but couldn't complete the comeback. Matt Ryan had three RBI, while Anthony Swenda and Justin Taylor each drove in a run as well

In game two, the Retrievers jumped out front in the first on a two-run double from Matthew Best to drive in both Swenda and Ryan.

It remained 2-0 until the fifth when Luke Trythall drove home Swenda with an RBI single, and it became 4-0 in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Best that plated Dawson Baracani.

Swenda would score Kyle Eddington and Jesiah Carpenter with a two-run single in the seventh, before Luke Buscaglia scored on an eighth inning balk to make it 7-0.

Zach Kelly and Joe Pucek each worked a scoreless frame of relief to complete the victory.

The rubber game of the three game series will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Alumni Field
