Men's Lacrosse Opens America East Slate by Hosting Defending Champion Bryant on Saturday

UMBC (1-3) opens its 20th season of America East Conference play when they entertain defending league champion Bryant (4-2) on Saturday, March 16. The opening face-off is set for noon and the game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Gary Stein on the call.

RETRIEVER RECAP
  • No. 17 Richmond broke free of pesky UMBC over the last 17 minutes and defeated the Retrievers, 13-4, before 923 fans at UMBC Stadium.
  • Junior midfielder Jordan Galloway recorded his third career three-goal game versus the Spiders, but the hosts were constantly thwarted by UR goalkeeper Zach Vigue, who saved 15 of 19 shots on goal.
  • Senior goalkeeper Jayson Tingue made a season-high 14 saves, one shy of his career single-game high.
OTHER NOTES
  • Senior attackman Mike Doughty produced three multiple-assist games in UMBC's first three outings and is ranked 12th nationally with 3.0 assists per game. He averages more than one assist per game (48a/35gp) in his Retriever career. He just hit the 80-point mark (34-48-82) and needs two assists to become UMBC's first player to reach 50 since Max Maxwell (66 career assists) achieved the mark in 2016.
  • Doughty has assists in 20 of his last 22 games played. He (3-12-15) leads the Retrievers in scoring, while senior linemate Brian Tregoning (9-3-12) is the team leader in goals scored. Galloway is right behind Tregoning with eight goals and 11 total points.
  • Senior face-off specialist Zach Dudley won eight face-offs versus Richmond and became the sixth Retriever to reach the 300-win plateau at 302 draws won.
  • UMBC is 3-7 in its last ten America East Conference openers. They've dropped the last two, dating back to a 13-12, 4ot victory over Stony Brook in 2021.
A LOOK AT THE BULLDOGS

  • In its first year in America East play, Bryant (12-5) won the 2023 tournament title with identical 12-11 victories over Binghamton and UAlbany (2ot).
  • The Bulldogs are off to a strong start in 2024, posting a 4-2 mark and heading to UMBC on a two-game winning streak. They are 1-1 versus ranked opponents, defeating No. 15 Boston U., 12-6, and falling to No. 17 Harvard, 14-13.
  • First year goalkeeper Scott Einarson was named Rookie of the Week by the America East Conference on Monday. He made 13 saves in the Bulldogs' 16-5 victory over Fairfield last Saturday.
  • Sophomores Johnny Hackett (11-13-24) and Jack Lonsinger (15-7-22) have been a dynamic offensive duo for the potent Bulldogs.
  • Bryant averages 13.0 goals per game and is ranked 20th nationally in scoring offense. They are ranked first in face-off winning percentage.

SERIES NOTES
  • In the first meeting between the two schools a year ago, Bryant prevailed, 17-13, in a high-scoring affair in Providence.
  • UMBC scored four consecutive man-up goals midway through the fourth quarter to trim a 7-goal deficit to 15-12, but could not complete the rally.
  • Mateo Brown led the way with five goals, but Hackett (7) and Lonsinger (3) combined to score ten times for BU. Two of Brown's goals occurred on man-up opportunities.
UP NEXT
  • UMBC leaves the state of Maryland for the first time in 2024 when they face associate AE member Merrimack on Saturday, March 23. Game time in North Andover, Mass. is set for noon.
